Piru Aloo (Nepali Aloo Chutney)

This chutney was my first introduction to Nepali cuisine. I got married in 1974 .

In  1976 we went to Lucknow to my Mother-in-law’s house. I was 3 month’s pregnant, and I was craving all kinds of food stuff. So my M-I-L made me this chutney( which is not a chutney but actually  a kind of pickle). I freaked out on it. So it was made for every meal. It is called Piru Aloo meaning chilli potato!! It is scrumtious and tasty.

Ingredients

1/2 kilo potatoes – boiled; 4 tbsp brown sesame seeds roasted till fragrant ; 4 or 5 green or red  chillies ;10 to 15 cloves of garlick ; 1 to 2 lime juice ; 2 green chillies split down the middle ; coriander a bunch finely chopped; salt to taste

Method –

Take the roasted sesame seeds , 4 to 5 chillies, cloves of garlick and grind it in a silbata till it is finely done. Take the boiled potatoes, peel them and chop them in 1 inch cubes. Add salt to the masala and squeese the lime juice to it. mix it well. Add it to the potatoes and with gentle hand mix the piru aloo well. Add the chopped coriander . Again mix well. In a small kadai take some mustard oil and put it on low flame. Once the mustard  oil starts smoking put in the split chillies in it and turn off  the flame. Put the chillies on top of the potatoes.  Put the Piru Aloo for 1/2 hr in the fridge. Serve cold with tooth picks or small forks

Enjoy this delicious treat!!!
